The Laban Syndrome is a Christian-themed book in which Pastor John Bendixen reveals a spiritual concept he calls “Laban Syndrome,” based on the biblical character Laban from Genesis. The book explores how this syndrome (a spirit or set of controlling influences) works through people’s personalities and choices to hinder believers from walking fully in God’s covenant blessings and fulfilling their divine assignments. It teaches that this influence can show up even in individuals who appear religious, and outlines how it diverts energy, redirects resources meant for God’s purposes, fosters distraction, and seeks advantage in ways that prevent believers from becoming all God has planned for them. The author describes specific characteristics of this syndrome and offers biblical insight on how to recognize and overcome it, encouraging readers to stay aligned with God’s will rather than being controlled by worldly systems or fleshly decisions.
What I learned from this book
Through this book, I learned who Laban is, how he operates, and how his influence can show up in our lives. One statement that stood out to me was when Pastor John said, “Laban recognizes you as a son of God because of Jesus,” reminding me that we live under the blessing of our Heavenly Father.
I also learned about Jacob’s constellation, and what impacted me most was Pastor John’s statement: “If only Christians would give patient consideration to every decision and let God speak in all things and at all times.” This challenged me to slow down and allow God to lead instead of rushing decisions.
Pastor John reveals eleven distinct characteristics that expose how Laban operates in our lives. I learned about the threefold blessing from Jacob’s constellation and how we, too, can receive these same blessings. When Pastor John said, “Without the blessing of a spiritual father in your life, you cannot have the rights that God has already allotted to you,” it highlighted the importance of being connected to a spiritual father that God has placed in your life.
I also learned about plantedness and how essential it is to be planted in a church in order to walk fully in God’s plans and your constellation. I was challenged to be honest with myself about where I truly am whether Laban is still operating in my life and whether I have a Pharisee heart. One powerful quote that stood out to me was, “You cannot deceive God; He sees and knows your heart.” This reminded me how important honesty before God truly is.
Overall, this book helped me recognize the influence of Laban in my life and become more aware of when and how he operates. It also showed me the importance of being spirit-dominant so I can discern when Laban tries to enter my life.
